Acne-prone skin refers to a chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the pilosebaceous unit.  The clinical manifestations involves the interaction of several host factors, including the stimulation of sebaceous glands, dysbiosis of the pilosebaceous follicle microbiome, and cellular immune responses. Other factors such as genetics and diet may also influence the development and progression of the skin condition. 

The progression of microcomedones into other types of blemishes has been theorized to involve the following 4 primary events:
